This post over at Music City Bloggers makes me feel like I should make some "cheese grits" with it just to prove to Fluffernutter that one does not need a dubious Kraft food to make good cheese grits, but I don't know if I'm up for the challenge. I'll put some thought into it for sure. And I do need to figure out how to make my own fried tofu with it as well. I'm going to go broke buying the nuggets at Whole Foods that are $7.99 per pound otherwise. And I think that might be a good way to use that yellow cornmeal that taunts me from the pantry.
Side note: I'm disturbed by the phenylalanine content in the nutritional yeast, though. Seems to be in all of them and I haven't yet figured out why. I prefer to avoid it (though I'm not PKU) so it's not a danger, but this requires further investigation...

I mix nut. yeast with equal parts dry breadcrumbs garlic and parsley for my tofu breading. It is also awesome added to a veg gravy. Have you ever eaten at "The Grit"? There is a great recipe for yeasty gravy in their cookbook I could send you.
But then they wouldn't be cheese grits.
Have you checked -- there's probably a law in Davidson County against mixing native foodstuffs and wholesome-yet-exotic foods.

Do you like tofu scrambles? It is REALLY good sprinkled on tofu scramble, right when you're about to take it off the heat. You can also make a sauce with it, there are loads of recipes. I had one the other day that was basically water, flour, corn starch, some spices, and nooch. It was good on pasta and would make a great base for pizzas, or on top of nachos with some salsa. I also sprinkle it on my brocolli.
Lesley, haven't we talked about BULK? Save some money and get it out of the bulk section.
phenylalanine is naturally occurring in most yeasts. In fact deficiencies of it are not that good.
Unless you can't metabolize the amino acid and are a phenylketonuric.
Sprinkle it one popcorn. I make a mean cheezeburger mac (like hamburger helper) with it. Fried squash is greart with it. Pour it on baked potatoes. I make a good spread for grilled cheezes using it. (yes, I am purposely spelling "cheeze" that way.)

This is very helpful to me. The 8yo, who's now been vegetarian for more than 9 months, is a fan of nutritional yeast, but having never eaten it myself, I had no idea what to do with it beyond sprinkling it on popcorn.
I've used nutritional yeast one time -- in the old Laughing Man yeasty gravy (anyone from Nashville n the 1970s remember it? It was great). I'm totally devouring people's ideas here -- Sweet Cheeks just announced that she won't be eating pork anymore.
Vegan mac & cheese! There's a good recipe on my blog. Also, nutritional yeast is delicious on buttered (Smart Balanced) toast.
