New Whole Foods Market in Franklin--Grand Opening May 18th

Yesterday, I took a tour of the new Whole Foods Market in Franklin, Tennessee with the Nashville Food Bloggers. The new store is a significant upgrade over the old one with more floor space expanded offerings, and most importantly for local lunchers, a much larger hot/cold bar and prepared foods area.

Along with the usual sections you'd expect in a new Whole Foods (cheese, sustainable seafood, bulk foods, grind-your-own nut butters), it's got something I've never seen before--bulk herbs, spices, and seasonings that you can buy in any amount. As in, if you only need a teaspoon of, say, kelp granules or juniper berries for a special recipe (and you don't want to buy a lot), you can! I haven't seen this at the Green Hills Whole Foods, but I'll look closer next time since it's more convenient to where I live. Because that is a really neat concept.

Another feature is their Health Starts Here section that employs "Healthy Eating Specialists" to help customers make informed choices and will highlight dishes and meals made with the Health Starts Here principles, one of which is that each meal should have a majority of plant-based foods. I definitely support that.

And yet another great convenience for those who work or live in the Cool Springs area is that the store will be hosting the Franklin Farmers Market on Tuesdays throughout the summer from 3pm until 6:30pm. Additionally, WFM carries a number of items and food from local sources so if you have a product you'd like to sell, just contact the department manager who will direct you on the way to get your product in the store.

The old WFM in Cool Springs closes at the end of the day today and the new store at 1566 West McEwen Drive (on the southwest corner with Mallory Lane) opens at 7:30am Wednesday morning with free breakfast and a grand opening at 9am.

I am very much looking forward to this new location; it's going to be so much easier to stop on my way home from Spring Hill. Not to mention, I'll do anything to not drive by Toys R Us with the kid in the car...

Green Hills doesn't have the bulk spices in the actual Whole Foods, but as I recall they do have a bunch in Whole Body. The selection is paltry compared to that photo, though.

Ohhh, I didn't know they were closing the other one! I just thought they were opening a new one further into Franklin. Wonder what's going into the old space? I kinda liked the old one, anything is better than navigating Green Hills, plus it reminded me of Wild Oats.

The turnip truck in the gulch does the spices, herbs, etc by weight. Not as big a selection though but much more convenient than cool springs. At least for me.

I use the Turnip Truck's limited selection of bulk spices fairly often when I just need something for one recipe. The bonus is that more than once I've needed so little that it rang up as zero on the scales, so no charge!

The Green Hills Whole Foods location has had bulk spices since opening, as did/does the original Coolsprings location. At Green Hills they are located in the bulk food section on an end cap as well as in the traditional baking aisle. There are also a few selections in Whole Body but those are mostly homeopathic herbs.

To add further confusion regarding the Green Hills Store & bulk spices, they are a recent discovery for me. I'm not sure how long they've been there, but I only recently noticed them. I personally LOVE this idea. It's much less wasteful to use a tiny plastic bag when you need to restock, than it is to purchase a new glass or plastic container of a spice every time you run out. Their bulk spice is located with their bulk grain.

I'm thinking maybe I spend too much time in the local Whole Foods stores. Maybe I should cut back from the 3-4 times weekly. :) This may be why people ask if I work there.

Anything else in the stores that I can help you find? :)

Ah, thanks for the info--what a relief to know I don't have to drive all the way to Franklin!

I'm not sure where other folks are looking, but the Green Hills store definitely sells spices in bulk-just like Mister NashVeggie said! The franklin store did too, but they had a smaller selection. In Green Hills the jars are on the shelfs by the larger bulk bins :)
I loved that they started the health starts here program!
I was supposed to be at the preview yesterday but couldn't make it. The new store is less than a mile from my office; I'll wait for a week or so to check it out though; I'm sure it's going to be insane!

Lesley, I also love the Health Starts Here program-- seems like WFM is stepping up to promote a plant-based diet! Also appreciate their efforts to raise industry standards for animal welfare. Great post!

Great Photos Lesley! I am actually looking forward to the trail mix bar. I take trail mix on my many biz travels instead of eating crappy airport food, so this trail mix bar is going to be a good thing for me. The only problem is, I never go to Cool Springs cuz it is too far.

Seems like fun. Green hills does have bulk spices - it is the peanut butter aisle. Get them all the time.
